"Ghoti" Does Not Say "Fish"

“Ghoti” does not say “Fish”. Although “gh” does say /f/ in “cough”, “o” says /I/ in “women”, and “ti” says /sh/ in women, they do not in “ghoti”. An important aspect is missing in “ghoti”, context. the context that causes, “gh” to make the sound /f/ are both historical and positional, though we will focus on the positional aspect. “Gh” only makes the sound /f/ when it comes at the end of its morpheme, as in “cough” but also as in “roughly” where we can see that the “gh” is in the middle of the word, but at the end of the morpheme “rough”.
